Educational Qualification

The main contributions made in the Ph.D work are,

  • To access the flashover voltages of polluted porcelain insulators, it is necessary to know the arc voltage gradient. Experiments were conducted with a suitable setup in which voltages were measured across the arc for different currents and ESDDs.

  • Using the Dimensional Analysis an equation for the critical current has been derived considering the various parameters like, pressure, layer conductivity, humidity and the dimensions of the insulator.

  • Experimental determination of Ayrton’s arc constants A & n.

  • A new equation for the flashover voltage of polluted insulators has been derived interms of modified profile factor and the dimensions of the insulator.

  • The experimental and analytical results were compared with the published experimental and theoretical results and the agreement is found to be excellent.

 

On the whole the work has provided a new and realistic methodology for assessing the pollution performance of porcelain insulators.
